The World's Best Gin has Been Named by Experts, and It Has a Unique Mix of Flavors

Alcohol experts from around the world have delivered their results for this year's International Wine & Spirit Competition. More than 100 judges gathered in London to taste more than 4,000 different spirits from around the world. When it came to gin, one choice—and one region—reigned supreme.

Gin comprised the biggest category at this year's contest and earned the most medals, with 760 total including more than 50 golds. At the top of the heap with a rating of 99 points is Four Pillars Distillery's Barrel-Aged Bloody Underhill Shiraz Gin. Four Pillars, like many of the top offerings from this year's competition, is based in Australia.

The liquor has a one-of-a-kind flavor profile, according to the more than 100 distillers, blenders, and other industry professionals gathered for the competition. "[It has] a warm, complex, and rich palate of cocoa, licorice, and juniper, with hints of mint," the experts said. "The levels of both sweetness and alcohol are perfectly judged. The length is good and the finish persistent."

Down Under seems to be the best place on Earth to find good gin. Australia has the most entries in the top 25 gins with five while New Zealand has two. They're trailed by countries like England and Japan with three each and Germany and Sweden with two each.
